CERTIFICATION COURSE DESCRIPTION
Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) training is perfect for human service professionals who directly intervene in crisis situations, teaching de-escalation techniques as well as restrictive and nonrestrictive interventions. Throughout this training, completion of the training, participants will learn how to:
- Recognize the stages of an escalating crisis and evidence-based techniques to appropriately de-escalate
- Utilize verbal and nonverbal communication to resolve a crisis before the situation becomes violent
- Utilize decision-making skills to match the level of the response to the risk of the crisis, focusing on the least-restrictive response
- Implement physical intervention techniques to help handle aggressive behaviour in the least restrictive and safest approach
At the successful completion of the training, participants will receive a CPI Blue Card certification.
COURSE FORMAT
This course is held in a mixed format, with both a virtual and in-person training component.
The virtual training will be emailed to all registrants at least seven (7) days prior to the in-person training date. The virtual component of the training will take approximately 3 to 4 hours to complete. The virtual component of the training must be complete prior to attending the in-person training date.
Registrants who register for open courses with less than seven (7) days will be sent the virtual training within twenty-four (24) hours of registering, however, again, please be advised that this must be completed prior to attending the in-person session.
The in-person training component will be held at The Sheltering Tree’s head office, located at 425 Lindsay Road, Peterborough ON, K9J 6X3.
At the completion of the training, participants will receive a CPI Blue Card certification.
CANCELLATION POLICY
If you need to cancel your registration seven (7) or more days prior to your scheduled NVCI in-person training date, The Sheltering Tree will issue you a full refund. If a cancellation is made with fewer than seven (7) days to the scheduled training date, you will be given credit to attend a future NVCI training course provided by the Sheltering Tree. Please note that if you have completed the virtual component of the training but need to cancel the in-person date, you must complete the in-person training component within three (3) months of the virtual component completion date.
The Sheltering Tree reserves the right to cancel a program. In the event of program cancellation, The Sheltering Tree’s responsibility will be limited to a refund of the registration fee.

SAFE PARTICIPATION GUIDELINES AND WAIVER
Participants are expected to seek necessary medical advice relating to any physical or medical conditions or limitations that may affect their ability to safely participate in the training. Any pre-existing injury or medical condition that may impact the participant’s abilities or put them at a higher risk of injury should be disclosed to the Certified Training Instructor prior to beginning any of the activities so that proper accommodations can be made. At all times during the training, participants are expected and obliged to take reasonable care of their own safety and understand the physical requirements of each exercise. Not all exercises are suitable for all participants. It is the participants’ responsibility to be aware of, and understand, the physical requirements of any training course they attend.
