Our Mission, Vision and Philosophy

Mission

Our mission at The Sheltering Tree Child & Family Services is to create an environment that nurtures, while enhancing the social, physical and mental health of children, youth and their families. By providing a tailored, effective and culturally sensitive model, our programs impart the tools needed to overcome barriers they may encounter throughout their journeys.

Vision

The Sheltering Tree will provide quality, effective and nurturing care for children, youths and their families. Our vision is for every child and youth who enters our program to feel important and valued. We want to provide children and youths in our care with more than just a house to live in, we want to provide them with a family, a community and ultimately a sense of belonging.

Philosophy

The founding members of the Sheltering Tree Child and Family Services believed that this field of work can be extremely rewarding. However, they became frustrated by gaps they observed in other programs that were meant to support foster children and youth in our communities.

These gaps involved a deficit in the type and quantity of internal programming offered to the children and youth as well as a deficiency in the quality and quantity of training and support offered to the all members of the front line staff, including Foster Parents, Internal Case Managers and Child and Youth Workers.

The founding members used their extensive knowledge and experience working with children and youth to help address and close these gaps. Their observations became the driving force behind the development of The Sheltering Tree’s educational and supportive style of programming.

The Sheltering Tree Child and Family Services’s programming is dedicated to supporting and empowering children, families, and the entire front line staff.

Our unique services and opportunities, viable, inclusive programs and comprehensive, continuous training programs prepare all members of our team for whatever challenges they may encounter.

Our program is adaptable to the individual needs of each child and family and is designed to involve biological families wherever appropriate.

In addition, we hope to provide every teenager and young adult who leaves our program with a successful exit strategy and ongoing support after they leave The Sheltering Tree.

At The Sheltering Tree, our philosophy is to provide well rounded, inclusive services for children and families of all ages, genders, abilities, races, ethnicities, national origins, colours, sexes, sexual orientations, gender identities and religious expressions.

We endeavor to fit our internal programming and support to the individual rather than forcing the individual to fit into the program.
